Strelitzias

Strelitzia 'Golden Delight'

Strelitzia ‘Golden Delight’

There are 5 species of Strelitzia, all endemic to Southern Africa with 3 endemic to South Africa.   They are beautiful, water-wise & very popular landscaping plants that are used around the world.  Two short growing (0.5-1.5m) species are found, namely S. reginae & S. juncea.   The other three species are S. nicolai, S. caudata and S. alba which all grow tall, generally 4-10m.

Way to Grow nursery specializes in growing the more rare and sought after species.   They currently have S. juncea which is particulary drought, wind & cold tolerant with its terete leaves.   It makes an excellent feature plant & works well planted in mass with its texture & is very low maintenance species, more so than any of the other Strelitzias.  They produce the same lovely orange ‘bird of paradise’ flowers which are pollinated by various bird species.   They are also busy producing Strelitzia ‘Golden Delight’, a stunning yellow petal, reddish tinged spathe hybrid of S. juncea!
